How to Get Rid of Bad Odors in Your House, Room by Room

Air fresheners mask odors instead of fixing them. Here's how to actually find and eliminate the source, room by room, for a home that's genuinely odor-free rather than just temporarily covered up.

Masking vs. Actually Fixing the Problem

Air fresheners and scented candles cover odors temporarily but don't address the source — which means the smell comes back, often stronger, once the scent fades. Finding and eliminating the actual source is the only real fix, and it's usually more straightforward than it seems.

Kitchen Odors

  • Garbage disposal — grind ice cubes with citrus peels, or baking soda and vinegar, to clear trapped food residue
  • Trash can — wash the can itself, not just replacing the bag; residue builds up on the can's interior over time
  • Refrigerator — an open box of baking soda absorbs ongoing odors; a deep clean addresses existing buildup (see our kitchen deep-clean guide)
  • Dishwasher and washing machine — both can be significant, often-overlooked odor sources (see our dishwasher and washing machine cleaning guides)

Bathroom Odors

  • Drains — hair and soap residue trapped in drains is a common, persistent source; a drain cleaner or baking soda/vinegar combination run regularly helps
  • Exhaust fan — a dusty, underused exhaust fan doesn't effectively clear moisture, which contributes to mildew odor over time
  • Towels and bath mats — these hold moisture and odor longer than people expect; wash more frequently if odor is an issue

Pet Odors

  • Litter boxes — scoop daily and fully clean (not just scoop) weekly; location matters too, since poor airflow makes any odor worse
  • Pet bedding — wash regularly; it holds odor more than most people account for
  • Furniture and carpet — enzyme-based cleaners specifically break down pet odor at a molecular level, unlike general cleaners that only mask it

Musty or Mildew Smells

Usually a moisture issue — check bathrooms, basements, and any area with poor ventilation. A dehumidifier helps address ongoing moisture; the existing smell itself often needs an enzyme or odor-neutralizing product rather than a standard air freshener, which won't actually eliminate it.

General Whole-Home Odor Sources

  • Carpets and rugs absorb and hold odors from pets, cooking, and general use over time — a deep clean (see our carpet cleaning guide) addresses this directly
  • HVAC system — if odors seem to come from the vents specifically, duct cleaning may be the actual source
  • Closed-up rooms with poor airflow tend to develop a stale smell even without an obvious cause — regular airing out helps prevent this

Bottom Line

Lasting odor control means finding the actual source — a drain, a trash can, an appliance, fabric that's absorbed smell over time — rather than covering it up. Get a free price estimate if a deeper clean would help address odor sources throughout your home.
