How to Clean Blinds and Curtains Without Ruining Them

Blinds and curtains collect more dust than almost anything else in a room, and they're also two of the easiest things to accidentally damage while cleaning. Here's how to do it right.

Why These Get Skipped (and Why That's a Problem)

Blinds and curtains aren't part of most people's weekly routine, which means dust has months, sometimes longer, to accumulate — and because they're often near windows, they also collect pollen and outdoor particles more than most surfaces in a room.

Cleaning Horizontal Blinds

  1. Close them fully so slats present a flat surface, then dust with a microfiber cloth or a blind-specific duster, working top to bottom
  2. Flip and repeat on the other side — don't skip this; the underside collects just as much dust
  3. For heavier buildup, wipe each slat with a damp microfiber cloth dampened with a mild soap solution, drying as you go to avoid water spots
  4. For significant grime, especially in a kitchen, take them down and soak in a bathtub with warm soapy water, then rinse and air dry

Cleaning Vertical Blinds

Similar approach — dust first with a microfiber tool, then spot-clean individual panels with a damp cloth as needed. Vertical blind fabric panels (if yours are fabric rather than vinyl) may be removable for washing; check the specific attachment method before attempting this.

Cleaning Curtains

  • Check the care label first — this determines everything else, and skipping this step is the most common cause of curtain damage during cleaning
  • Vacuum with an upholstery attachment regularly between deeper cleanings to remove surface dust
  • Machine-washable curtains: wash on a gentle cycle with cold water, and consider air-drying rather than a hot dryer, which can cause shrinkage
  • Dry-clean-only curtains: don't attempt to wash these at home — the fabric or lining can be damaged in ways that aren't reversible
  • Heavy or lined curtains often do better with professional cleaning regardless of the label, given their weight and structure

How Often to Clean Blinds and Curtains

  • Dusting: monthly is a reasonable baseline, more often near a frequently-opened window or in a dusty environment
  • Deep cleaning: every 3–6 months for blinds, and roughly every 6–12 months for curtains, depending on fabric and how much direct sun/dust exposure they get

What to Avoid

  • Harsh scrubbing on vinyl or faux-wood blinds, which can scratch or dull the finish
  • Washing dry-clean-only fabric curtains at home
  • Hanging curtains back up while still damp, which can lead to mildew if there's any lining or heavier fabric involved

Bottom Line

Blinds and curtains need less frequent attention than most of a home, but they're also easy to damage with the wrong method — checking care labels and dusting regularly prevents most of what goes wrong.
